Villa Armira is a large late Roman villa complex near Ivaylovgrad in Haskovo Province, Bulgaria, notable for its extensive mosaic floors and Roman domestic architecture.

The villa dates to the Roman period and reached its largest phase during the 2nd to 4th centuries AD; it was discovered and excavated in the 20th century and has been the subject of archaeological conservation since. Excavations revealed domestic rooms, baths and the mosaic decoration that identify it as an elite rural residence.

The ruins lie in southern Bulgaria near the town of Ivaylovgrad in Haskovo Province, close to the Greek and Turkish borders in a rural, hilly landscape.

• Mosaics: Most visible remains date to the Roman period and include extensive mosaic floors that are displayed under protective coverings at the site.
• Access: The site has on-site displays explaining the excavation findings and is accessed from nearby Ivaylovgrad and surrounding villages in Haskovo Province.

What to See#

• Peristyle: A central peristyle courtyard surrounded by mosaic-decorated rooms and columns, forming the villa’s organising space.
• Bath complex: A bathing complex with hypocaust-heated rooms and mosaic floors that illustrate the villa’s domestic luxury.
• Mosaic rooms: Several richly coloured Roman mosaic panels depicting mythological and geometric motifs, preserved in situ under protective shelters.

Villa Armira is near the village of Ivaylovgrad in Haskovo Province. By car it is about 60-80 km from Haskovo city (roughly 1-1.5 hours). Local buses to Ivaylovgrad may require connections-driving or hiring a taxi from nearby towns is the most practical option.
