Palace Roman villa at Stabiae with well-preserved frescoes
Near Castellammare di Stabia, Villa Arianna offers Roman-era villa ruins with mosaics and coastal views of the Bay of Naples; archaeology and ancient domestic architecture draw visitors.
Villa Arianna is a Roman seaside villa at Stabiae, near modern Castellammare di Stabia in Campania, noted for its preserved frescoes and luxurious layout. The complex dates to the late Republican and early Imperial periods and was buried and preserved by the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
The site contains multiple decorated rooms, mosaics, colonnaded courtyards and terraces that originally faced the Gulf of Naples, giving a sense of a large elite coastal residence. Visitors explore open-air excavated areas where fresco fragments and architectural remains are displayed in situ.
Excavations at Stabiae began in the 18th century under Bourbon rule; Villa Arianna was among the villas uncovered in those campaigns and has been the subject of intermittent archaeological work since. Many original wall paintings were documented during early excavations and some material was removed to museums, while structural remains remain visible on site.
The villa lies in the modern municipality of Castellammare di Stabia on the Bay of Naples, a short drive southeast of Pompeii and roughly in the vicinity of Naples along the coast. The site is accessed from local roads serving the archaeological area at Stabiae.
- Archaeological context: The villa is part of the Stabiae archaeological ensemble and was first uncovered during 18th-century Bourbon excavations, with later archaeological work revealing extensive Roman decoration.
