Viljandi Castle

Viljandi Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress ruin located above Viljandi Lake in the town of Viljandi, Estonia. The stronghold dates to the 13th century and was built by the Livonian Order as one of their regional administrative and military centers.

Ruined stone walls and the remains of defensive structures occupy the castle hill and are set within a landscaped park that provides trails and viewpoints over the lake and the town. The site is popular for short walks, panoramic views and outdoor events, with the ruins forming a recognizable silhouette from the lakeshore.

Construction began in the 13th century under the Livonian Order; the castle was a major regional fortification through the medieval period and fell into decline after wars and changing political control in the 16th and 17th centuries. Over time it was partly dismantled and became a picturesque ruin rather than a functioning fortress.

The castle stands within the centre of Viljandi on the lake’s edge in Viljandi County, occupying a wooded promontory that overlooks the town. It is immediately accessible from the town centre and is an integral part of Viljandi’s urban landscape.
