The Viking Ship Museum on the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo houses exceptionally well-preserved Viking Age ships and grave goods from royal and high-status burials. The collection’s star objects are three ninth-century ships that illustrate Viking shipbuilding and burial customs.

Exhibits present the hulls and associated woodwork, carved details, and many grave objects recovered with the ships, alongside interpretation about seafaring, burial rites, and material culture of the Viking Age. Conservation work and contextual displays accompany the ship presentations to explain excavation and preservation methods.

The museum sits on Bygdøy, a museum peninsula west of central Oslo that is home to several maritime and cultural museums and is accessible by road, bike, or short ferry connections from the city center.

• Tune ship: Tune ship and associated grave finds - another early medieval burial vessel represented in the collection that contributes to understanding Viking shipbuilding and funerary customs.

• By bus: The Viking Ship Museum is on the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo. Regular city buses (notably route 30 to Bygdøy) run from the city centre and stop near the museums; expect a short walk (around 5 minutes) from the bus stop to the Viking Ship Museum.

• By ferry (seasonal): In summer a passenger ferry runs from Aker Brygge to Bygdøy and docks close to the museum. By car it’s roughly 4-6 km from central Oslo to Bygdøy, with limited parking near the museum.

• Take the short ferry from Aker Brygge to the Bygdøy peninsula early in the day to beat cruise-ship and day-tripper peaks at the museums.
• Allow time to study the grave goods and carved sleds beside the big ships-these smaller artifacts give much of the historical context that visitors often overlook.
