Viking Ship Museum

The Viking Ship Museum on the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo houses exceptionally well-preserved Viking Age ships and grave goods from royal and high-status burials. The collection’s star objects are three ninth-century ships that illustrate Viking shipbuilding and burial customs.

Exhibits present the hulls and associated woodwork, carved details, and many grave objects recovered with the ships, alongside interpretation about seafaring, burial rites, and material culture of the Viking Age. Conservation work and contextual displays accompany the ship presentations to explain excavation and preservation methods.

The museum sits on Bygdøy, a museum peninsula west of central Oslo that is home to several maritime and cultural museums and is accessible by road, bike, or short ferry connections from the city center.
