Vijayanagara refers to the ruined capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire, located at Hampi in Karnataka, India. It is an extensive archaeological site and one of South Asia’s most important medieval urban centres.
The site attracts visitors for its large collection of temple complexes, palace ruins, stone chariot and sculpted pillars, and the dramatic boulder-strewn landscape. Key monuments include the Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple complex with its stone chariot, the Royal Enclosure and numerous smaller shrines and civic structures spread across the site.
Vijayanagara was established as the capital of a powerful South Indian empire in the 14th century and remained politically and economically important until its defeat at the Battle of Talikota in 1565, after which the city was sacked and largely abandoned. Archaeological study and conservation have documented its urban plan and monumental architecture.
The ruins lie on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in northern Karnataka, near the modern towns of Hampi and Hospet; the monument complex covers an area of several thousand hectares and is accessed from regional roads and railheads.

- UNESCO and scale: The Group of Monuments at Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering roughly 4,100 hectares and contains dozens of major monuments and many smaller ruins.
- Best time to visit: The dry season from October to February is the most comfortable period to visit when temperatures are lower and rainfall is minimal.
