Vía de la Plata

Archaeological Site Historic Roman road route through western Spain

The Vía de la Plata follows an ancient Roman north-south corridor from Mérida across Spain; pilgrims and road-trippers trace Roman bridges, medieval towns and agricultural landscapes through Castile-León.

Main image

Vía de la Plata is an ancient north-south route in western Spain that began as a Roman road linking Emerita Augusta (Mérida) and Asturica Augusta (Astorga). The corridor later became a longer commercial and pilgrimage axis that is commonly followed today from Seville to Astorga.

As a well-known long-distance route it is used by pilgrims, hikers and cyclists and passes through multiple historic regional centres; sections when extended from Seville to Astorga measure on the order of 800 kilometres. Along the route are Roman bridges, milestones and urban archaeological ensembles, as well as medieval churches and town centres that serve as daily stages for travellers.

The road was laid out and used by the Romans and remained an important trade and communication artery through the medieval period; in modern times it has been revived as a cultural route and as a variant of the Camino de Santiago. Many towns on the route preserved Roman or medieval fabric because the corridor stayed in continuous use.

The route runs roughly north-south across western Spain, crossing Andalusia, Extremadura and Castilla y León; Seville is commonly treated as the southern anchor while Astorga is the northern junction with routes toward northern Spain.

  • Length and waymarking: When followed as a modern long-distance route from Seville to Astorga it covers roughly 800 kilometres and is waymarked for walkers and cyclists in many sections.
  • Roman and medieval remains: Remains along the route include Roman bridges, milestones and town plans; several towns host well-preserved archaeological or medieval sites that are good viewing points.

What to See #

  • Major stops (Mérida, Cáceres, Salamanca, Astorga): Roman and medieval towns and monuments along the route, including the archaeological ensemble at Mérida and the cathedral city of Astorga, act as the main stopping points for walkers and drivers following the Vía de la Plata.
  • Seville (southern terminus): Starting and ending urban anchors that frame the long-distance route and its modern pilgrimage variant, with Seville commonly used as the southern terminus when the camino is extended.

How to Get to Vía de la Plata #

Major access points are Seville in the south and Astorga in the north. Regional trains and buses connect many intermediate towns (Mérida, Zamora, Salamanca). For walkers, most people begin in Seville (Seville Santa Justa railway station) or Mérida; buses (e.g., ALSA) serve smaller towns along the route.

Tips for Visiting Vía de la Plata #

  • Plan daily segments rather than the entire route in one go - the Vía de la Plata crosses varied terrain and small towns are the travel unit here.
  • Bring cash for small albergues and cafes along the route; some rural services still prefer euros in hand.
  • If walking, start sections early to avoid the midday sun in summer and seek shade in towns like Mérida and Salamanca.
