Plaza Mayor in Salamanca is a large 18th-century Baroque square located at the centre of the city’s historic district and UNESCO World Heritage area. Its uniform sandstone façades and arcaded galleries create a continuous rectangular plaza used for social life and events.

The square’s ground-floor arcades are lined with cafes, shops and the municipal buildings, making it a focal point for both locals and visitors. The space is regularly used for markets, concerts and public celebrations.

Constructed in the 18th century as part of a city-centre redevelopment, the plaza replaced earlier medieval market spaces and has retained its Baroque character through conservation and continued civic use.

Plaza Mayor sits in Salamanca’s historic centre, integrated with the city’s network of streets and within easy walking distance of the cathedrals and university quarter.

Plaza Mayor in Salamanca is in the heart of the city’s historic old town. It’s a short walk from the central area-about 10-20 minutes on foot from Salamanca’s main bus and railway stations-and is easily reached on local buses that stop near the casco antiguo; once in the old town the square is pedestrianized and immediately obvious.

• Visit Plaza Mayor early in the morning or around sunset to enjoy the square's Baroque architecture with far fewer tourists and to catch the facades in warm light.
• Enter through one of the arcaded sides (especially Calle Toro or Calle Zamora) to find quieter cafés and artisan shops tucked away from the busiest central arcades.
• Pair a short visit to the square with the nearby University of Salamanca and its Plateresque façade (look for the famous frog carving) - many visitors see the plaza but miss that short walk to the university and the views from its tower.
• Check for local events and midday closures: the Plaza is often used for concerts and civic events which change how the space flows and when cafés open their outdoor seating.
