Vesuvius National Park
Park Protected area around Mount Vesuvius, active volcanic summit
Straddling Mount Vesuvius east of Naples, Vesuvius National Park contains trails to the crater rim and lava-scarred slopes. Day-hikers visit for crater walks and wide views across the Bay of Naples toward Pompeii.
Vesuvius National Park protects Mount Vesuvius and its immediate slopes in Campania, Italy, and was established to preserve the volcanic landscape and surrounding communities. The park covers the volcanic complex that dominates the eastern end of the Bay of Naples.
The park’s primary attraction is the volcano itself - a stratovolcano with an active summit cone that rises to about 1,281 metres. Several marked trails and paths lead toward the crater rim, where visitors can look into the cone and, on clear days, see panoramic views across the Bay of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula.
The site is most visited for short hikes to the crater rim, guided walks that explain volcanic features, and viewpoints that overlook nearby archaeological sites and towns. Trails also run along the older caldera ridge known as Monte Somma, offering different perspectives on the volcanic complex.
Mount Vesuvius produced the catastrophic AD 79 eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum; the park was created in the late 20th century to manage conservation, public access, and risk around the still-active volcanic system. Park management monitors volcanic activity and maintains the visitor trails and facilities.
The park sits on the slopes east of the city of Naples in Campania, roughly adjacent to the towns that grew in the volcano’s shadow. The volcano and park dominate the skyline immediately southeast of Naples and the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum lie on its lower flanks.
- Summit elevation: The summit cone reaches about 1,281 metres above sea level, and marked trails lead from the parking area to the crater rim.
- Trail conditions: Access is on foot along maintained trails; expect volcanic rock underfoot and rapidly changing weather at higher elevations.
What to See #
- Gran Cono (main crater): The active summit cone of Mount Vesuvius, open to visitors via marked trails that reach the crater rim; the summit sits at about 1,281 metres above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Bay of Naples on clear days.
- Monte Somma: The older caldera ridge that partially encircles Vesuvius and forms a higher-ring silhouette above surrounding towns; the Monte Somma ridge defines much of the park's northern boundary and provides additional walking routes.
