Vesterålen is an archipelago and district in Nordland county in northern Norway, lying immediately north of the Lofoten islands. The group comprises several large islands and many smaller islets and is noted for dramatic coastal scenery and fisheries-based settlements.

Key visitor activities focus on wildlife and landscape experiences - boat-based whale-watching excursions, seabird colonies on offshore islets, steep fjords and coastal drives across the islands. The area is also used as a gateway for sea- and mountain-based outdoor activities including hiking and fishing.

The islands have a long history of Norse settlement and a contemporary economy centred on fishing, aquaculture and tourism. Villages and small towns provide local services and museums relating to maritime culture.

Geographically Vesterålen lies north of the Lofoten archipelago in Nordland, within the Arctic Circle, and includes the main islands of Andøya, Langøya, Hinnøya and Hadseløya, connected by bridges and ferries and fronting the Norwegian Sea.

  • Wildlife and viewing seasons: Best known for seasonal whale-watching (summer) and good conditions for Northern Lights viewing in winter, with several coastal harbours offering boat trips and observation points.

How to Get to Vesterålen #

Vesterålen is an island district in Nordland reached by road, ferry and regional flights. Main towns with transport links are Stokmarknes and Sortland; Stokmarknes has a small regional airport (Stokmarknes/Skagen, SKN) with flights to larger hubs, and Hurtigruten coastal ships call at Stokmarknes.

If driving, you typically approach via the E10 and county roads from Harstad/Narvik/Evenes area (roughly 1.5-2 hours’ drive depending on start point) and use short local ferries between islands; once ashore the ferry or airport terminals are usually a short walk (minutes) into town.
