Vermio Mountains
Mountains Greek mountain range with ski resorts and forests
The Vermio range in northern Greece includes ski areas, pine forests and mountain villages; visitors come for downhill skiing in winter and summer hiking on marked trails.
The Vermio Mountains are a forested mountain range in Central Macedonia in northern Greece, known for hills and ridges used for outdoor recreation and winter sports.
Forested slopes, alpine pastures and local ski facilities attract hikers in summer and skiers in winter; the area includes developed resort infrastructure such as the Seli ski centre and a number of mountain roads and trails. Elevation and trail variety make the range a regional destination for day trips and weekend outdoor activities.
The range has long been used for pastoralism and timber harvesting; during the 20th century parts of the area were developed for skiing and tourism while much of the higher ground remains lightly populated woodland.
Geographically the Vermio massif sits in the inland part of Central Macedonia, rising between the broad plains and the higher interior mountains and lying near the regional towns of Veria and Kozani.
- Access and trails: Several marked trails and mountain roads provide access for day hikes and short multi-day routes; winter facilities concentrate around the main resort areas.
What to See #
- Seli ski resort: A small ski area and winter sports centre that operates on the northern slopes of the range and serves local skiers and snowboarders.
How to Get to Vermio Mountains #
Vermio Mountains are in Imathia near the towns of Veria and Naousa in Central Macedonia. By car follow the A2/Egnatia Odos west from Thessaloniki and take the exits toward Veria/Naousa, then continue on regional roads up into the range (signs for Seli and local ski resorts). Driving from Thessaloniki to the main access roads is roughly 80-100 km (about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic).
Public transport: KTEL regional buses run from Thessaloniki to Veria and Naousa; from those towns take a local bus or taxi up into the mountains to trailheads and ski villages (many trailheads are a short local-road drive or a walk of under 1 km from village stops).
Tips for Visiting Vermio Mountains #
- For hiking visit Vermio in late spring-early autumn for stable trails and clearer long-distance views; for skiing head there in winter - check local ski-resort (Naousa/Seli area) timetables before you go.
- Use Naousa or Seli as the main access points: both towns provide the most direct road access and lift/road connections into the higher slopes, so start your route planning from them.
- Avoid weekend crowds by setting out early on weekdays; many day-trippers arrive late morning, so summit/ridge sections are far quieter at dawn.
Best Time to Visit Vermio Mountains #
For hiking and clear mountain views, go late spring through early autumn; winter is best if you want snow sports.
