Verdun Cathedral

Verdun Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Verdun) is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Verdun in the Grand Est region of northeastern France and serves as the seat of the Bishop of Verdun. The building has medieval origins and combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements.

Architectural highlights include a tall west façade and medieval towers that define the town skyline; the cathedral’s interior and exterior display a succession of building phases typical of long-lived medieval churches. The cathedral is a primary religious and architectural landmark of Verdun and is readily reached from the town centre.

Construction and major rebuilding took place in the medieval period under the authority of local bishops and cathedral chapters; successive phases introduced Gothic elements onto an earlier Romanesque core. The cathedral suffered damage during World War I in the 1914-1918 fighting around Verdun and was restored in the years that followed.

The cathedral stands in the historic centre of Verdun on the Meuse River in northeastern France. Verdun is a regional town about 70-80 km northwest of Nancy by road and the cathedral is within walking distance of the town’s central squares and the riverfront.
