Verdon Gorge
Gorge Deep French limestone canyon famed for turquoise river
The Verdon Gorge cuts limestone canyons drained by a turquoise river and backed by the Lac de Sainte-Croix; hikers, kayakers and rock climbers use rim trails, river routes and canyon viewpoints.
The Verdon Gorge (Gorges du Verdon) is a deep river canyon in southeastern France’s Provence region, carved by the Verdon River through limestone. It is one of Europe’s largest and most dramatic river gorges, with steep cliffs and a distinctive turquoise river in its lower reaches.
Outdoor activities are a major draw: the gorge is popular for hiking (notably the Blanc-Martel trail), rock climbing on its limestone walls, and paddling or boating on the river and on Lac de Sainte-Croix at the gorge’s downstream end. Scenic drives and overlooks along the rim provide extensive panoramic views of the canyon and valley.
The gorge was formed by river incision into Jurassic and Cretaceous limestones over geological timescales; human interventions include dams and reservoir creation downstream that formed Lac de Sainte-Croix and modified river flow. Rock-climbing routes and maintained trails date from the 20th century as recreational use expanded.
Geographically the Verdon Gorge lies in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, between the small towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, set within a rugged upland landscape of plateaus and river valleys.
- Scale: The canyon stretches roughly 25 kilometres and reaches depths of up to about 700 metres in places, carved into limestone by the Verdon River.
- Hiking route: A popular access route for hikers is the Blanc-Martel trail, which passes through tunnels and narrow passages alongside the river and is typically walked as a 1-day or multi-section route.
What to See #
- Sentier Blanc-Martel: The Blanc-Martel footpath is the best-known trail through the gorge, following the riverbed and tunnels for key sections and commonly used by day-hikers and multi-day walkers.
- Lac de Sainte-Croix: Lac de Sainte-Croix is the reservoir at the downstream end of the gorge used for swimming, kayaking and as the main launch point for water activities in the lower Verdon valley.
- Rim viewpoints: Scenic viewpoints along the rim include the Point Sublime and the Route des Crêtes, a driven and walked ridge road offering multiple panoramic overlooks of the canyon.
