Caribbean Coast & Offshore Islands (Los Roques, Margarita, Morrocoy)

By May the first more frequent showers appear, though the islands often keep long dry spells between storms because of their velocity relative to mainland moisture. Visibility for diving sometimes dips after heavy squalls, and afternoon downpours can briefly disrupt boat schedules to Los Roques and Gran Roque. Rain brings fewer crowds; if you want lower rates and don’t mind an occasional wet afternoon, May can be rewarding for quiet beaches.

Northern Coastal Lowlands & Caracas (La Guaira, Caracas, Coastal Highway)

May marks the onset of the rainy season in earnest for the northern lowlands and Caracas’ surrounding hills, with regular afternoon storms and occasional thunderstorms. Flooding and short landslides can happen on steeper roads near the coastal range after prolonged heavy rain, so check local advisories before driving. The city streets smell fresh as the scrub and gardens green up; bring a compact umbrella and expect interruptions to outdoor plans.

Andean Highlands (Mérida, San Cristóbal, Sierra Nevada)

May marks the true start of the rainy season in the Andes: frequent afternoon thunderstorms, misty mornings and cloud-shrouded summits are common. The Mérida cable car may operate intermittently during severe weather, and high-elevation routes to Pico Bolívar are less reliable. On the positive side, the countryside is emerald green and rivers like the Chama gain volume - pack rainproof clothing and accept occasional delays for more dramatic scenery.

Los Llanos (Central Plains)

May is the transition month when thunderstorms start to arrive more often and low-lying roads begin to soften - boat access to interior savannahs improves as waterways start refilling. Lodges shift operations to rely more on river travel than overland drives; expect sudden rains that can last hours and turn dirt tracks to clay. Waterproof gear and robust boots are necessary, and some remote camps may become accessible only by boat.

Guayana Shield & Gran Sabana (Canaima, Angel Falls, tepuis)

May through September are the rainier months across much of the Guayana Shield; rivers rise dramatically and Angel Falls reaches its most voluminous displays. This is the season for dramatic, thunderous waterfall viewing and swollen rivers ideal for long boat trips, but trails to remote tepui bases become muddier and some airstrips may be waterlogged. Pack heavy-duty waterproofs, insect protection and allow extra transit time for boat transfers.

Orinoco Delta & Southern Rainforest (Delta Amacuro, Amazonas fringe)

May through September correspond to the delta’s highest water levels and peak rainfall: broad inundation of the floodplain makes boat travel the only reliable mode and opens access to remote lagoons. This is the best period for extensive canoe safaris and for seeing aquatic wildlife in abundance, but heavy rains complicate logistics and increase the presence of biting insects and leeches in some streams. Strong rainproof gear and confirmed local guides are indispensable.
