Veluwemeer
Lake Man-made lake separating Noordoostpolder and Veluwe
The Veluwemeer is a shallow Dutch lake separating the Veluwe from Flevoland. Popular activities include boating, windsurfing, birdwatching and cycling along shoreline paths that link nearby towns and nature reserves.
Veluwemeer is a shallow bordering lake in the central Netherlands that separates the Veluwe region in Gelderland from the Flevoland polder. The lake is part of the chain of lakes created during 20th-century land reclamation and water-management projects.
The lake is popular for boating, windsurfing, swimming and shoreline recreation and is bordered by cycle paths and beaches that are used year-round by locals and tourists. Facilities and small harbours along the shore support recreational use and short boat trips.
Veluwemeer formed in the course of mid-20th-century engineering works connected with the creation of Flevoland and the re-configuration of the Zuiderzee into inland lakes and polders. Its presence reflects the Netherlands’ long-term programme of land reclamation and water control.
The lake lies between the province of Flevoland and the Veluwe area of Gelderland, with towns such as Harderwijk and Lelystad on or near its shores.
