Museum de Fundatie is an art museum based in Zwolle in the Dutch province of Overijssel, with an associated country house and sculpture park near Heino. It presents a collection spanning Old Masters through modern and contemporary art.

The main museum is housed in a former palace in Zwolle with galleries for paintings, sculpture and decorative arts; a distinctive modern rooftop extension was added to the Zwolle building in the 2010s. The museum also runs exhibitions and displays at Kasteel het Nijenhuis, which includes parkland and outdoor sculpture.

The collection includes Dutch and international works across several centuries and the museum hosts rotating temporary exhibitions and loan shows. The Zwolle site sits in the city centre, while Kasteel het Nijenhuis lies a short drive away in a rural park setting.

• Notable modern extension: A modern rooftop extension was added to the Zwolle building in the 2010s, creating a distinctive external element that altered the city skyline and provides additional gallery space.
• Two-site operation: The museum operates from two main sites: the central Zwolle palace building for the permanent collection and Kasteel het Nijenhuis for sculpture and temporary exhibitions in a park setting.

What to See#

• Zwolle site (main museum): Palace building in Zwolle - an ornate neoclassical city building that houses the museum’s principal galleries and long-term collection displays in the centre of Zwolle.
• Kasteel het Nijenhuis (Heino): Kasteel het Nijenhuis - a secondary site and sculpture park associated with the museum, located near Heino and used for exhibitions and outdoor sculpture displays.

• Go in mid‑ to late afternoon to combine quieter galleries with good light on the museum's rooftop extension and city views.
• Don't skip the rooftop/'eye' gallery - the panoramic terrace and displays up there are a highlight that many visitors miss.
• Check the schedule for temporary exhibitions in the lower halls; the museum rotates contemporary shows that are often worth the extra time.
