Veľká Fatra National Park is a protected mountain park in the Žilina Region of central Slovakia, conserving a mosaic of forested ridges, karst plateaus and alpine meadows. Its highest point is the peak Krížna at 1,574 metres.
The park offers extensive hiking and mountaineering opportunities across marked trails and ridge routes, with viewpoints, meadows and springs that draw day hikers and multi-day trekkers. Limestone features, forested slopes and open summits are characteristic of its landscape.
The area was designated and expanded as a national-level protected area to conserve its forests, upland habitats and traditional mountain pastures; protection has supported managed tourism and nature conservation in the region.
Veľká Fatra lies in central Slovakia between the towns of Martin and Ružomberok and is part of the broader Inner Western Carpathians landscape.

How to Get to Veľká Fatra National Park #
Veľká Fatra National Park is accessed from the surrounding towns of Ružomberok, Martin and the Žilina region. By car use the main regional roads from Ružomberok or Martin (follow signs for villages at the park edges such as Blatnica, Štefanová or the Turiec valley) - these towns serve as the usual roadheads to park trailheads.
Public transport: regional buses connect Žilina, Martin and Ružomberok with the small villages at the park boundary; from those village bus stops most marked trails and huts are reachable by short walks (typically minutes to a couple of kilometres). If you need specific village/bus lines, check local timetables for the Žilina/Žilinský kraj and Ružomberok routes.
Tips for Visiting Veľká Fatra National Park #
- Start early in the morning to get clear summit views and to avoid the fairly common summer afternoon storms that affect Slovak mountain ridges.
- Stick to marked trails and mountain-hut (chata) networks - the park's marked routes are well maintained and huts offer reliable navigation points in poor weather.
- If you want quieter routes, choose lesser-used ridges rather than the park's main approaches at weekends, and expect parking at main trailheads to fill up on sunny days.
