How to Get to Velingrad
Velingrad is a spa town in southern Bulgaria; it does not have its own airport or major train hub. Most international visitors arrive via Sofia (SOF) or Plovdiv (PDV) and continue to Velingrad by regional bus or car.
Sofia Airport (SOF): Sofia is the main international airport serving Velingrad. From Sofia Airport you can take a taxi or a combination of bus and train to Sofia city centre (≈20-30 min, taxi ≈BGN 25-40), then catch a direct bus to Velingrad from Sofia Central Bus Station; the Sofia→Velingrad bus takes about 2-3 hours and fares are typically BGN 12-20.
Plovdiv Airport (PDV): Plovdiv is closer by road. From Plovdiv city or airport you need to get to Plovdiv Central Bus Station (bus or taxi ≈15-25 min) and then take a direct bus to Velingrad (≈1h30-2h, fares around BGN 6-12). Flights to Plovdiv are less frequent but convenient for some regional connections.
Train: There is no direct long-distance train to Velingrad; the nearest major railway hub is Pazardzhik or Plovdiv. From Sofia you would travel by train to Pazardzhik or Plovdiv and then take a bus or local taxi for the remaining distance. Train fares within Bulgaria are modest (a couple of leva) but routes require changes and add time.
Bus: Buses are the most reliable public option to Velingrad. Regular coaches run from Sofia Central Bus Station and Plovdiv Central Bus Station directly to Velingrad; journey times are roughly 2-3 hours from Sofia and 1.5-2 hours from Plovdiv, with fares in the BGN 6-20 range depending on operator and class.
