Veleta (Sierra Nevada)

Pico del Veleta is a peak in the Sierra Nevada range of Andalusia, Spain, rising to roughly 3,398 metres and ranking among the highest mountains in continental Spain. It sits within the boundaries of Sierra Nevada National Park.

A high paved road climbs close to the summit and has historically been used for cycling and motor access; the mountain is also popular for hiking, ski touring and alpine sports in winter. Scientific facilities on the slopes include the IRAM 30-m radio telescope, a major millimeter observatory.

The peak and surrounding ridges form part of the Sierra Nevada ski area and alpine research infrastructure, with routes linking to nearby cols and refuges. Recreational use is seasonal and subject to weather and park regulations.

Located on the southern Iberian peninsula, Veleta lies in the Sierra Nevada massif close to the city of Granada within Andalusia and is a prominent landmark in the region.
