Sierra Nevada National Park in Andalusia protects a high mountain range in southern Spain and includes continental Spain’s highest peaks. The park encompasses alpine terrain, glacial cirques, high plateaus and river headwaters, and is noted for its biodiversity and seasonal snow cover.

A principal attraction is Mulhacén, the highest mountain in continental Spain at 3,479 metres, along with other high ridges and summits used for summer hiking and winter sports. The park combines wilderness hiking, botanical interest (high mountain endemics) and ski infrastructure higher on the slopes.

The area has been managed for conservation since the late 20th century, with protected status addressing both ecological values and recreational use. Seasonal conditions vary sharply by altitude, with snow and glacier remnants at the highest elevations and Mediterranean climate lower down.

Sierra Nevada sits in the provinces of Granada and Almería in Andalusia, roughly 30 kilometres southeast of the city of Granada; the park’s high zones are accessible from mountain roads and the Sierra Nevada ski station.

• Alpine environment: The park contains Spain’s highest continental peak, making it important for alpine flora and summer hiking routes above 2,500 metres.

What to See#

• Mulhacén: Mulhacén - the park’s highest summit and the highest point in continental Spain at 3,479 metres, popular with hikers and mountaineers in summer.
• High-mountain and ski areas: High-altitude zones and the ski resort area around Veleta and Sierra Nevada station, which provide access to alpine landscapes and trailheads.

The park is most easily reached from Granada (about 35-50 km to the main access points). From Granada city center, take the A-395 highway toward the Parador de Sierra Nevada and the ski station; local buses and guided transport run seasonally to trailheads and the resort. For western approaches, use the A-44 from Bailén toward Granada and then local roads into Alpujarra villages.

• If visiting for hiking, start from Capileira or Trevélez for quieter trails rather than the main Sierra Nevada National Park car-access points.
• Carry altitude-aware gear - peaks exceed 3,300 meters and sun exposure is intense even when temperatures are cool.
• In winter, separate the national park (protected landscapes and trails) from the resort area (Sierra Nevada Ski Station) - the resort operates its own lift passes and schedules.
