Veii
Archaeological Site Ancient Etruscan city and archaeological site near Rome
Veii, north of Rome, preserves Etruscan ruins and necropolises within a regional park; archaeology trails and tombs draw visitors interested in pre-Roman Italy and countryside walks.
Veii is an ancient Etruscan city and archaeological area north of Rome in the Lazio region, once among the most important Etruscan city-states. It was a political and religious center in the first millennium BC and later came under Roman control.
Visitors to the site encounter visible remains of Etruscan temples and urban structures, including the Portonaccio sanctuary with terracotta architectural decoration, city-wall fragments and nearby necropoleis. The area is managed as an archaeological park with trails and interpretive signage.
Historically Veii was a powerful Etruscan neighbor of early Rome and was captured by Roman forces in 396 BC; after its defeat it was gradually absorbed into the Roman state and its political prominence declined.
The archaeological site lies north of modern Rome, within the metropolitan hinterland of the city in the Lazio administrative region.
- Roman conquest: Conquered by Rome in 396 BC after a long rivalry; the capture is a key event in early Roman expansion into Etruscan territory.
- Park status: The site is protected as the Parco di Veio, an archaeological park with trails and interpretive material for visitors from Rome.
What to See #
- Portonaccio Temple (sanctuary): The Portonaccio sanctuary on the Veii acropolis contains the remains of a major temple complex dating to the 7th-6th centuries BC, known for terracotta decorative sculpture.
- Acropolis and city walls: The acropolis area includes city-wall remains and the archaeological traces of Etruscan urban settlement and public architecture.
- Necropoleis: Several necropoleis associated with Veii lie around the site, containing chamber tombs and grave goods that illustrate Etruscan funerary practice.
