Vehicle Assembly Building
Building Huge NASA facility for assembling and stacking rockets
The Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center is the huge assembly hall where NASA prepared Saturn V rockets and shuttles. KSC tours provide external views and commentary on its role in spaceflight history.
The Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) is the large vertical assembly facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida used to integrate launch vehicles and payloads. It is one of the largest buildings by volume and a central part of U.S. spaceflight infrastructure.
Completed in the 1960s for the Apollo programme, the VAB was used to assemble Saturn V rockets and later adapted for Space Shuttle processing and other launch vehicles. It continues to be repurposed for contemporary heavy-lift rockets and associated ground operations.
The building stands within the Kennedy Space Center complex on Florida’s Atlantic coast, close to Launch Complex 39 and accessible from the Visitor Complex on organised tours or official access.
- Size and scale: Height of the building is roughly 160 metres, making it one of the world's largest single-volume buildings by internal volume.
- Role in launch operations: Located adjacent to Launch Complex 39, it has been used to assemble Saturn V rockets, Space Shuttle stacks and modern heavy-lift vehicles.
What to See #
- High bays: Four very large internal assembly bays used to stack and integrate launch vehicles, each served by massive doors and gantry systems for horizontal and vertical movements.
How to Get to Vehicle Assembly Building #
The Vehicle Assembly Building is on NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (Merritt Island). Public access to the VAB itself is restricted; visitors should go to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, which operates bus tours that include a stop with views of the VAB. From Orlando, drive east to the Space Coast (roughly a one-hour drive depending on route); follow signs to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and use its parking and tour services to visit the VAB viewing areas.
Tips for Visiting Vehicle Assembly Building #
- Access to the Vehicle Assembly Building is via the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex bus tour-purchase KSC admission and the bus tour ahead of time to secure a spot.
- If you plan to see launch activity or rollouts, check NASA/KSC schedules beforehand; launch preparations and launch days can change public access and cause heavy traffic around the Cape.
- Allow extra time on the KSC bus tour for the photo stops and commentary about the VAB's scale-most visitors underestimate the building's size until they see it from the designated viewing areas.
Best Time to Visit Vehicle Assembly Building #
Visit in the dry season (November-April) or on weekdays/shoulder months for milder weather and smaller crowds; summer is hot and busier.
