How to Get to Vatersay #
Vatersay is the southernmost inhabited island of the Outer Hebrides and is connected to the Isle of Barra by a short causeway, so you can drive between Barra and Vatersay. Reach Barra by scheduled flights to Barra Airport (Loganair from Glasgow) or by ferry to Castlebay; once on Barra it is a short drive across the causeway to Vatersay.
There is local road access on Vatersay itself and short walks from the causeway to the island’s beaches and settlements.
Tips for Visiting Vatersay #
- Take the causeway from Barra (driveable) rather than relying on a separate ferry; the short road link makes Vatersay easy to include on the same day as Castlebay but facilities are limited so plan logistics beforehand.
- Visit outside peak summer day-trip times or early morning to enjoy Vatersay's best beaches with fewer day visitors from Barra, and book any accommodation or campsites well in advance during July-August.
- Explore the island's west coast walking routes beyond the main beach - many visitors miss quieter coves and seabird-watching spots a short walk from the causeway.
