Vartanants Square Plaza

Vartanants Square is the principal public square in Gyumri, the second-largest city in Armenia’s Shirak Province. It forms a focal civic space in the city’s urban centre.

The square is an open, paved public space surrounded by urban streets and historic buildings; it is used for ceremonies, markets and public events and provides an orientation point for visitors exploring Gyumri’s 19th-century urban fabric. Pedestrian areas and nearby cafés make it an everyday meeting place for residents.

Its layout and role date to the city’s 19th-century development when Gyumri expanded as a regional centre; the square has remained a central element of the city’s public life since then. Over time the area has been repaired and adapted following earthquakes and urban renewal projects.

Vartanants Square sits in central Gyumri in Shirak Province, in northwestern Armenia. Gyumri is about 120 km northwest of Yerevan by road and the square is located within the dense historic core of the city.
