Varnhem Abbey

Varnhem Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery located in Varnhem in Västra Götaland County, Sweden, established in the 12th century. It became an important ecclesiastical centre in medieval Västergötland and retains substantial masonry from the medieval abbey church and monastic complex.

The site offers an accessible abbey church with surviving Romanesque and Gothic elements, visible monastic ruins and a small museum that presents finds from archaeological excavations. Visitors can see medieval graves and carved stonework that illustrate the abbey’s historical importance.

The Cistercian community founded the abbey in the mid-1100s and it functioned as a religious and economic centre until the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century led to its secularisation. Later archaeological work has clarified the layout and the sequence of building phases.

Varnhem lies a few kilometres west of the town of Skara in the agricultural landscape of Västergötland, and is reachable by regional roads linking the site to nearby towns.
