Vardøya is a small island in Finnmark in northern Norway that hosts the town of Vardø. It is the administrative centre of Vardø municipality and is notable for its coastal fortress.
The island contains a compact harbour town and the historical fort headland, which are the main local points of interest. The built-up area includes municipal services, a museum, and facilities linked to fishing and maritime activity.
The site has long been used as a local trading and fishing centre and the fortress on the island has played a defensive role along Norway’s northern coast. Over time the settlement developed into the municipal centre for the surrounding district.
Vardøya sits off the Varanger Peninsula in the Barents Sea, on the northeastern edge of the Norwegian mainland region of Finnmark.
- Arctic location: Located north of the Arctic Circle, so it experiences the midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter.
What to See #
- Town of Vardø: Covers the compact town core with harbour facilities, municipal services and the local museum; the settlement is the administrative centre of the municipality.
- Vardøhus Fortress: Sits on a headland at the edge of the town and has served as the island's primary coastal defence; visible from the harbour and open to visitors at specific times.
How to Get to Vardøya #
Vardø is reachable by coastal ferry services (Hurtigruten stops in Vardø on certain sailings) and by regional flights to Vardø Airport (VDB) from Tromsø or other northern hubs. Roads connect the airport to the town on the island.
