Vanua Levu
Island Fiji's second-largest island with sugarcane and reefs

Vanua Levu is the second-largest island of Fiji, located in the northern part of the Fijian archipelago and forming part of the country’s Northern Division. The island is characterised by hilly interior terrain, coastal plains used for agriculture and extensive surrounding coral reefs.
Key population centres include the towns of Labasa and Savusavu, which provide regional services, ports and airports. The island’s economy is based on agriculture, fisheries and an emerging tourism sector focused on diving and village-based experiences.
Over time Vanua Levu has remained less urbanised than Fiji’s main island, retaining more rural landscapes and traditional settlements while developing transport links by sea and air to other islands and to the mainland.
Vanua Levu lies north-east of Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu, and is accessed by domestic flights and inter-island ferries; the coastline is indented with bays and reefs and the interior rises to tropical hills.
- Second-largest island: It is Fiji's second-largest island and is less developed than Viti Levu, offering coral-fringed bays, sugar-cane farming areas and diving/snorkelling opportunities offshore.
What to See #
- Labasa and Savusavu: The island's main commercial and service towns, including Labasa in the northeast and Savusavu on the southern shore, which function as transport and market centres.
- Natewa/Taveuni-adjacent peninsulas: A large peninsula with coastal lagoons and reef systems popular for marine activities and scenic drives.
How to Get to Vanua Levu #
Vanua Levu (Fiji’s second-largest island) is reached by domestic air or sea. The island has two main airports - Savusavu (SVU) on the east coast and Labasa/Lalabalavu (LBS) - with regular domestic flights from Nadi and Suva.
Alternatively, inter-island ferries sail from the northern Viti Levu terminal at Nabouwalu to ports on Vanua Levu; from Nabouwalu passengers transfer by road to towns such as Labasa or Savusavu. Flight times from Nadi or Suva to Vanua Levu are typically short (around 30-60 minutes) depending on the route.
Tips for Visiting Vanua Levu #
- Aim for the dry season (roughly May-October) for the most reliable sea and road conditions across Vanua Levu and to access outdoor activities with fewer cancellations.
- If you want to save travel time, fly into Savusavu from Nadi - there are regular domestic flights - otherwise ferries from Nabouwalu connect Viti Levu to Vanua Levu but can take several hours, so check schedules in advance.
- Plan land travel between towns (Savusavu, Labasa) with extra time: many interior roads are unsealed and slow, so arranging transfers or a local driver/4x4 will make reaching remote resorts, dive sites and botanical spots far more reliable.
Best Time to Visit Vanua Levu #
Plan a visit to Vanua Levu in the dry season (May-October) for the most reliable weather for beach, reef and outdoor activities.
