Vanua Levu

Vanua Levu is the second-largest island of Fiji, located in the northern part of the Fijian archipelago and forming part of the country’s Northern Division. The island is characterised by hilly interior terrain, coastal plains used for agriculture and extensive surrounding coral reefs.

Key population centres include the towns of Labasa and Savusavu, which provide regional services, ports and airports. The island’s economy is based on agriculture, fisheries and an emerging tourism sector focused on diving and village-based experiences.

Over time Vanua Levu has remained less urbanised than Fiji’s main island, retaining more rural landscapes and traditional settlements while developing transport links by sea and air to other islands and to the mainland.

Vanua Levu lies north-east of Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu, and is accessed by domestic flights and inter-island ferries; the coastline is indented with bays and reefs and the interior rises to tropical hills.
