Vanikoro is an island group in Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands, located in the far eastern part of the country. The islands are historically notable as the site where the French explorer Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, lost his ships at the end of the 18th century.
The group is sparsely populated and covered in tropical vegetation; local communities maintain traditional subsistence activities. The islands have been the focus of historical and archaeological interest because of the late 18th century shipwrecks.
