Vani archaeological site

The Vani archaeological site is an ancient settlement and cemetery complex in Imereti, western Georgia, noted for rich material dated mainly to the first millennium BC. It is an important center for the study of the ancient Colchis cultural sphere.

The site was occupied in the first millennium BC and shows phases from the early Iron Age through Hellenistic times; archaeologists have recovered tombs and domestic remains that document long-term local occupation and external contacts. Systematic archaeological work in the 20th century established the sequence and produced the principal finds now held in the town museum.

Situated beside the modern town of Vani in the Imereti region of western Georgia, the site lies in the rolling foothills of Imereti and is approached from the town and nearby roads.

What to See #

• Necropolis and tumuli: A burial complex containing multiple tumulus burials and grave goods from the early Iron Age through the Hellenistic period; many excavated graves produced pottery, metalwork and votive objects.
• Settlement remains: The central settlement and raised tell where domestic and public structures were located, with remains of terraces, foundations and craft areas exposed by excavation.
