Vänern

Vänern is the largest lake in Sweden and the largest in the European Union, with a surface area of about 5,650 square kilometres and a complex shoreline with many islands.

Formed and shaped by glacial and post-glacial processes during the last Ice Age, the lake has supported settlements and inland shipping for centuries and has influenced regional trade and agriculture. Modern conservation and recreation management protect many islands and shoreline habitats.

Located in southwestern Sweden, Vänern sits inland from the Kattegat coast and spans several provinces; its northern shore is fronted by the city of Karlstad and it is connected hydrologically to the west by the Göta älv river.

• Outflow and activities: The lake drains westwards via the Göta älv river towards the Kattegat and has extensive shoreline opportunities for boating and fishing.
• Seasonal notes: Large seasonal variation in recreation - summer boating and island visits contrast with ice and winter conditions in colder years; check local services seasonally.

What to See #

• Djurö National Park: An extensive island-archipelago within the lake that includes Djurö National Park, protected for its forested islets and birdlife and established as a national park in 1991.
• Kållandsö and Läckö Castle: Kållandsö island and its shoreline that hosts Läckö Castle on the eastern shore of the island, a notable historical site and cultural attraction.
• Karlstad: The city of Karlstad on the northern shore, a regional service centre and common base for excursions and boat trips on the lake.
