Valmiki National Park

Valmiki National Park is a protected forest and wildlife area in the West Champaran region of Bihar, India, forming part of the Terai-Sivalik foothill ecosystem and bordering Nepal. It is a designated tiger reserve and supports large mammals such as Bengal tiger and Asian elephant alongside diverse birdlife.

The park contains mixed deciduous forest, riverine corridors and grasslands that attract wildlife year-round; wildlife-viewing is typically easier in the dry season when animals gather at water. Infrastructure for visitors includes forest-department guided safaris and basic forest rest points rather than large tourist facilities.

The area was set aside for conservation in the modern period to protect local fauna and habitats and later incorporated into India’s tiger-reserve scheme; it is managed by the Bihar Forest Department in collaboration with central wildlife authorities. Over time parts of the landscape have been managed for both strict protection in core areas and regulated use in buffer zones.

The park lies in northwest Bihar near the international boundary with Nepal, within the West Champaran district; nearest major towns include Bettiah and Motihari, with the landscape dominated by low hills, river valleys and floodplain forest.
