A major Hindu pilgrimage above Katra, Vaishno Devi requires a steep trek or helicopter for many devotees to reach the cave shrine; rituals, queues and mountain views define the visit.

Main image

Vaishno Devi Temple is a Hindu cave shrine in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, India, and is one of the subcontinent’s major pilgrimage destinations. The sacred cave housing the deity lies at an elevation of about 1,584 metres above sea level.

Pilgrims perform a mountain trek from the nearby town of Katra to reach the Bhawan and the cave, passing several devotional stops along the way; the final cave contains the sacred rock representations that devotees worship. The site includes facilities to manage large numbers of visitors and religious services.

The shrine has been revered for many centuries and has grown into an organized pilgrimage complex in modern times, with infrastructure developed to support mass pilgrimages and ritual observances.

Vaishno Devi is located on the Trikuta range near the town of Katra in the Reasi district of the Jammu region; Katra serves as the primary base for pilgrim access to the shrine.

  • Access options: The shrine sits at high altitude and is reached by a mountain trek of roughly 12 kilometres from the base town of Katra; options such as pony, palanquin and helicopter services are available for those unable to walk the full route.

What to See #

  • Holy Cave (Garbhagriha): The cave shrine at the end of the pilgrimage trek, which houses the sacred rock formations (pindis) that represent the goddess.
  • Bhawan: The Bhawan complex that surrounds the cave and functions as the main congregational and ritual area for pilgrims at the end of the ascent.

How to Get to Vaishno Devi Temple #

Vaishno Devi is approached from Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. The usual route is to travel to Jammu (Jammu Tawi railway station or Jammu airport) and then take a taxi or bus to Katra (Katra is about 40-50 km from Jammu by road).

From Katra the temple shrine is reached on foot via the established 12 km pilgrimage track (popularly walked by pilgrims); there are also helicopter services and pony/palanquin options from Katra for parts of the ascent, and Katra town has the main bus/taxi stand a short walk from the start of the trek.

Tips for Visiting Vaishno Devi Temple #

  • Start the trek from Katra before sunrise to avoid the hottest part of the day and long afternoon pilgrim queues; early starts also let you move through narrow sections of the route more quickly.
  • If you prefer to reduce walking, plan and book alternative transport (ponies, palki or helicopter) in advance through official operators at Katra-these services fill up on peak days and during festivals.
  • Avoid visiting on major festival days (e.g., Navratri) if you want shorter waiting times for darshan; if you must go during busy periods, expect significantly longer queues and plan extra time for return transit.

Best timing depends on whether you want to avoid crowds - outside major festival periods (and peak summer holidays) offers fewer pilgrims and easier trekking conditions.
