Uzon

Uzon Caldera is a volcanic caldera on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, notable for active geothermal activity and extensive hydrothermal fields. It lies within the larger protected area of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve.

The caldera hosts hot springs, mud pots and steaming ground that draw scientific researchers studying extremophile microbes and geothermal processes. The area has a range of geothermal features concentrated within the caldera floor and adjacent valleys.

Formed by volcanic activity, the caldera is part of Kamchatka’s complex volcanic landscape and has been shaped by repeated eruptions and geothermal processes over geological time. It is managed as part of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve to conserve its natural features and scientific value.

The site is located in central-eastern Kamchatka, within the boundaries of the Kronotsky Reserve and near other well-known geothermal sites such as the Valley of Geysers. Visitors reach the area by regulated tours, often requiring transport arranged from regional centers.
