Užice Travel Guide
City City in Central Serbia, Serbia
Perched above the Đetinja River, Užice offers fortress ruins, narrow streets and a museum of the 1941 Užice Republic; visitors trade grilled meat in kafanas, sample plum brandy, and set off on mountain trails toward Zlatibor.
Why Visit Užice? #
Užice sits in western Serbia where the Djetinja river valley and a preserved old town combine history with riverfront scenery. The Museum of the Užice Republic and fortress remnants tell the area’s wartime and medieval stories, while nearby hills offer hiking and seasonal escapes. It’s a place to experience regional culture and history away from Serbia’s larger tourist centers.
Who's Užice For?
Užice sits on the Đetinja River with easy access to surrounding hills, canyons and forest trails. Nearby viewpoints and quiet riverbanks suit hikers and birdwatchers who want off-the-beaten-path natural scenery.
The surrounding terrain offers climbing, canyoning and multi-day hiking routes, and local outfitters run day trips into Zlatibor and Tara regions. Road access makes it a practical jumping-off point for outdoor adventures.
Traditional Serbian taverns (kafanas) and bakeries in the old town serve hearty, affordable local dishes. Expect grilled meats, stews and regional cheeses at family-run spots around the central square.
Historic streets by the river and small neighbourhood cafés offer relaxed, intimate settings for couples. Short scenic drives into nearby mountains provide memorable day trips and quiet picnic spots.

How to Get to Užice
Užice (Ужице) is best reached via Belgrade's Nikola Tesla Airport, with onward connections by intercity bus or train to Užice. The town is a regional hub in western Serbia with a dedicated railway station and regular coach links to Belgrade and other cities.
Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG): The nearest major international airport. From BEG you can take the Airport Express / shuttle minibus to Belgrade city centre (to the main bus station / Savski Venac / Slavija) - expect roughly 30-40 minutes and a fare around 300 RSD (≈ €2.50-3.00). Taxis from the airport to central Belgrade cost about €20-€30 and take around 20-30 minutes; from central Belgrade you can catch regular buses or trains to Užice (see below).
(Note on other regional airports): There are regional airports in nearby countries (Sarajevo, Podgorica, Tivat) that can be used seasonally; if arriving there you will generally continue to Užice by intercity bus or a combination of bus + local transfers. Check schedules carefully for cross‑border services and border-control times.
Train: Serbia Rail provides services to Užice at Užice railway station (Železnička stanica Užice) on the Belgrade-Bar corridor. Trains run from Belgrade (Beograd Centar / Beograd Glavni) and other regional hubs; journeys are generally longer but scenic - plan for several hours depending on the service and expect ticket prices in the low hundreds to around 1,000-1,200 RSD for longer intercity legs. Check Srbija Voz timetables in advance as frequencies can be limited.
Bus: Intercity buses are the most practical option. Regular services run to Užice from Belgrade Bus Station (Autobuska stanica Beograd / BAS) and from other regional towns; typical journey time from Belgrade is about 3.5-4 hours and tickets commonly cost around 800-1,200 RSD (≈ €7-10). Buses are frequent and are the easiest way to reach Užice from the capital or neighbouring cities.
How to Get Around Užice
Užice is easiest to navigate by intercity bus for arrivals and by car or taxi for exploring the surrounding region. Within the town itself, walking and local buses cover most needs; rent a car only if you plan excursions into Tara, Zlatibor or other rural areas.
- Intercity bus (800-1,200 RSD) - Intercity coaches are the most convenient way to reach and leave Užice - companies run frequent services to Belgrade, Čačak, Novi Pazar and border towns. Buses depart from the central bus station and are generally comfortable; buy tickets at the station or online where available and arrive at least 10-15 minutes before departure. They are reliable for day trips to nearby attractions like Tara and Zlatibor (you may need to change in larger towns).
- Train (600-1,200 RSD) - Užice has a railway station on the Belgrade-Bar route; trains are slower than buses but offer direct links to Belgrade and the Montenegrin coast on some services. Timetables can be sparse and journeys take longer, so use rail if you prefer a relaxed trip or are connecting to other rail routes - always check Srbija Voz schedules in advance. Expect basic on‑board amenities and the chance of scenic mountain stretches.
- Local bus (50-120 RSD) - City and regional buses connect neighbourhoods in Užice and nearby villages; they are inexpensive and useful for short hops. Timetables are posted at main stops but can vary on weekends, so ask locally for current routes. Tickets are modestly priced - buy on board or at kiosks where provided and carry small change.
- Taxi & ride‑hailing (Bolt, local taxis) (300-1,200 RSD) - Taxis and app-based services (Bolt operates in many Serbian towns) are convenient for early-morning or late-night travel and for trips to bus/train stations. Fares are higher than buses but reasonable for short trips across town; always agree a fare or use the meter/app to avoid misunderstandings. Useful for luggage or door‑to‑door transfers to nearby attractions and the bus/rail hubs.
- Car rental (€30-€60 / day) - Renting a car is the best option if you plan to explore the surrounding countryside (Tara National Park, Zlatibor) on your own schedule. Roads are generally in good condition on main routes; winter tyres may be needed in snowy months. Expect daily rental rates from mid-range providers to start around €30-€60 depending on season and vehicle class.
- Walking - Užice's centre is compact and very walkable - the main sights, cafés and markets are within easy walking distance of the bus and train stations. Walking is the best way to explore the historic town centre, but bring comfortable shoes for cobbled streets and steeper lanes.
