Uzhhorod Castle

Uzhhorod Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress in Uzhhorod, Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine, with origins tracing back to the medieval period and serving as one of the city’s principal historic landmarks.

The complex includes surviving fortifications, a central keep and courtyards; it houses the Transcarpathian Museum of Regional Studies, which displays regional archaeology, ethnography and historical exhibits. The castle’s elevated position provides views over the city and the nearby river.

Built in the medieval era and altered repeatedly over subsequent centuries, the site served as a defensive stronghold and a noble residence before taking on a museum and cultural role in the modern period.

The castle sits on a low hill above the Uzh River within the urban area of Uzhhorod, immediately adjacent to the city center.
