How to Get to Uyuni
Uyuni is served by a small regional airport (UYU) with flights from La Paz, and by long‑distance buses from La Paz and Potosí. Most travellers use flights when short on time or overnight buses when on a budget.
Uyuni/Joya Andina Airport (UYU): Uyuni has a small airport (UYU, Joya Andina) with scheduled flights from La Paz (El Alto, LPB) and occasionally from Sucre or other regional cities. Flight time from La Paz is about 50-70 minutes; expect short taxi rides (10 minutes) into Uyuni town from the airport.
El Alto / La Paz (LPB): Most international visitors arrive via La Paz (El Alto). From La Paz there are both flights and overland buses to Uyuni - flights save time, while buses are cheaper.
Train: There is no regular long‑distance passenger rail service; historic tourist/heritage trains exist on occasion but do not form a reliable intercity network.
Bus / Road: Overnight and daytime buses run between La Paz, Potosí, and Uyuni (journeys typically 8-12 hours from La Paz and 3-4 hours from Potosí). Overnight buses are common; expect fares roughly in the range of BOB 100-300 depending on service level (economy to semi‑cama). Local colectivos and taxis handle shorter regional transfers.
