Uturoa City
Main town on Raiatea island, Leeward Islands
On Raiatea’s western shore, Uturoa functions as the island’s port—yachts, inter-island ferries and market stalls congregate here; visitors use it to reach Taputapuātea marae, sail the lagoon and explore pearl farms.
Why Visit Uturoa?#
Uturoa, on Raiatea, is a gateway to classic South Pacific culture and lagoon sailing, anchored by the Taputapuatea marae and crystal coral waters. Local markets and eateries serve poisson cru and tropical fruit, while inter-island ferries and charter boats open access to snorkel spots and secluded motus. Traditional Polynesian dance performances and navigational lore make this a compact place to sample island history and seafaring life.

How to Get to Uturoa#
Uturoa is the main town on Raiatea and is reached either by a direct Air Tahiti flight from Papeete (PPT) to Raiatea (RFP) or by private boat connections. Air Tahiti provides the most reliable and frequent inter‑island scheduled service.
Raiatea Airport (RFP): Raiatea’s airport (RFP) is the main air gateway for Uturoa. Air Tahiti operates frequent inter‑island flights from Faa’a, Papeete (PPT) to Raiatea - flight time is about 45-55 minutes and fares commonly range from ~XPF 8,000-12,000 one way (prices vary by season). From Raiatea Airport it’s a 5-15 minute taxi or shuttle into Uturoa.
Papeete - Faa’a International Airport (PPT): International flights arrive at Papeete on Tahiti. Most visitors then take a short domestic flight with Air Tahiti to Raiatea (RFP) or other islands.
Train: There are no railways in French Polynesia.
Bus: Raiatea and Uturoa have limited local bus services and community shuttles; many visitors use airport shuttles, taxis or rental cars to move between the airport, town and nearby attractions. Inter‑island travel is done by Air Tahiti flights or private boat/ferry services where available.
How to Get Around Uturoa#
Uturoa is primarily accessed by Air Tahiti flights to Raiatea (RFP) from Papeete; from the airport taxis or shuttles deliver you into town. There are no trains and inter‑island travel relies on flights or private boats.
- Air Tahiti (inter‑island flights) (XPF 8,000-12,000) - Air Tahiti runs regular flights between Papeete and Raiatea (RFP); this is the fastest, most reliable way to reach Uturoa from Tahiti. Flights are short (around 45-55 minutes) and carry luggage; book early in high season.
- Taxi / airport shuttle (XPF 500-2,000) - From Raiatea Airport to Uturoa town centre taxis and airport shuttles take about 5-15 minutes. Taxis are inexpensive by metropolitan standards but carry island‑surcharge fares - expect to pay a few thousand XPF.
- Ferry / private boat (Varies (often XPF 1,000+)) - There are private boat and occasional ferry services between nearby islands and within the lagoon; schedules vary and many services are seasonal or charter‑only. Good for island‑hopping if you have flexible timing.
- Car rental / scooter (From ~XPF 6,000-10,000/day) - Renting a car or scooter on Raiatea is a common way to explore the island and its short coastal roads. Book ahead in high season and verify fuel and insurance terms.
- Bicycle - Uturoa and Raiatea are pleasant for cycling on low‑traffic roads; useful for short local trips in good weather. Watch for heat and sun exposure.
- Walking - Uturoa’s centre is compact and easy to navigate on foot. Walking is ideal for moving between the town, waterfront and local services.
