Ushakov Island
Island Remote Arctic island in the Kara Sea
Ushakov Island in the Arctic Kara Sea is uninhabited and visited mainly by researchers and polar expeditions studying ice conditions and Arctic wildlife.
Ushakov Island is an Arctic island in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. It lies well north of the Siberian mainland in the Arctic Ocean.
The island is remote, exposed to polar climate and sea-ice for much of the year, and has no regular tourist infrastructure. Its main interest is geographic and scientific rather than recreational.
Named in honor of the Soviet Arctic explorer Georgy Ushakov, the island has been recorded on modern Russian charts and used in polar mapping and scientific work. It has not been developed for settlement.
It sits at very high latitude in the Arctic Ocean within the jurisdiction of Krasnoyarsk Krai, far from major population centers and accessible only by specialized expedition transport.
- Accessibility: Extremely remote and within the high Arctic, it has no permanent population and is visited only by scientific or occasional expedition vessels or aircraft.
Tips for Visiting Ushakov Island #
- Ushakov Island is in the high Arctic and visits are possible only as part of organized polar expeditions or scientific missions-do not plan independent landings or spontaneous trips.
- If you must visit, arrange it through an experienced Arctic operator and expect travel windows in mid-summer (July-August) when sea ice is at its minimum; Russian permits and coordination with authorities are normally required.
- Treat any landing as restricted: wildlife disturbance and safety risks (weather, remoteness) mean that most operators limit landings and strictly control visitor numbers and routes.
Best Time to Visit Ushakov Island #
Accessible only in the brief Arctic summer (July-August) when sea ice retreated enough for expedition access; otherwise effectively inaccessible due to polar conditions.
