Uruk
Ruins One of world's earliest cities with Sumerian ruins
Uruk was a major Sumerian city-state whose archaeological mounds reveal early urban planning, temple precincts and pottery. History-minded visitors explore ruins associated with early writing and Gilgamesh-era traditions.
Uruk is an ancient Sumerian city in southern Mesopotamia, located at the modern site of Warka in Iraq. It is one of the earliest large cities in the world with major development in the fourth millennium BCE during the Uruk period.
The ruins include extensive mudbrick walls and large temple precincts, notably the Eanna district, with foundations that cover a wide urban core. Archaeological remains show complex public architecture and administrative layouts that reflect large-scale urban planning; the site at peak occupation covered on the order of a few hundred hectares.
Uruk grew rapidly in the late 4th millennium BCE and is closely associated with the early development of writing and state-level institutions. Over subsequent millennia the city continued to be occupied under various Mesopotamian polities and was excavated in the late 19th and 20th centuries by international archaeological teams.
The site lies in southern Iraq on the Euphrates floodplain near the modern town of Warka. It is inside Muthanna Governorate and sits on low, flat agricultural land that once supported large-scale irrigation around the ancient city.
- Scale: The site corresponds to modern Warka and was one of the first major cities in human history, reaching an urban footprint of roughly 200 hectares at its peak.
What to See #
- Eanna precinct: A large temple precinct dedicated to the goddess Inanna; contains substantial mudbrick foundations and was a primary religious and administrative centre in the city.
- Anu/central mound: A monumental ceremonial complex and high mound associated with early urban architecture and public buildings in the city core.
