Upton Park
Stadium Former West Ham stadium, now closed
Upton Park (former Boleyn Ground) in East London was West Ham United’s home until 2016; football supporters still visit the area for pubs, memorials and local club history.
Upton Park, commonly known as the Boleyn Ground, was a football stadium in East London that served as the home of West Ham United Football Club. The club occupied the ground from the early 20th century until the stadium closed in 2016.
The stadium hosted league football, cup matches and occasional other sporting events, and had a capacity in the mid 30,000s at the time of closure. After West Ham relocated to the London Stadium, the Upton Park site was cleared and redeveloped.
The ground lay in the London Borough of Newham and was a long-standing local sporting landmark until its demolition and subsequent redevelopment into mixed residential and community uses.
- Current status: Closed after the 2015-16 season and demolished in 2016; the former stadium site has been redeveloped for housing and local amenities.
- Capacity and tenancy: At closure it had a capacity of roughly 35,000 and had been West Ham United's home ground for more than a century.
How to Get to Upton Park #
The former Boleyn Ground sits in East London’s E13 postal area. The nearest Tube is Upton Park station (District line), about a 10-15 minute walk along Green Street from the site. From central London take the District line eastbound to Upton Park; the walk follows the old matchday route past market stalls and sports shops.
Tips for Visiting Upton Park #
- Walk the length of Green Street to feel the old matchday route - notice the worn shopfronts and the marble plaque near the junction of Barking Road.
- There is little left of the stadium itself; bring a map or use the community plaque on Green Street to orient what used to stand where the flats now do.
- Combine a visit with the nearby Upton Park station and the East Ham market for an honest slice of East London life.
Best Time to Visit Upton Park #
Best visited outside match hours in neighbouring grounds: the site is a residential development now, so approach as urban history rather than a live stadium.
