Uppsala Castle
Castle Renaissance castle overlooking Uppsala, now cultural institutions
Perched above the Fyris River, Uppsala Castle dates to the 16th century; its grounds, historical exhibitions and city viewpoints are included on walks through Sweden’s university city.
Uppsala Castle is a historic Renaissance castle sitting on a hill above the city of Uppsala in eastern Sweden. It was constructed in the mid-16th century as a royal fortress and administrative center and remains a dominant landmark in the city.
The complex includes formal state rooms, exhibition spaces and offices in restored wings, and the castle terraces give broad views over Uppsala, including the cathedral and the Fyris river valley. Parts of the castle are open to the public for museum exhibitions and guided visits.
Built under King Gustav Vasa in the 1500s, the castle served as a royal residence and regional stronghold; a major fire in 1702 destroyed significant parts of the structure, after which it was rebuilt and adapted for new uses. Later centuries saw continued restoration and repurposing for cultural and administrative functions.
The castle occupies a prominent hilltop location immediately west of Uppsala Cathedral and near the historic center of Uppsala, within easy walking distance of the university and city amenities.
