Uppåkra
Church Ancient Iron Age settlement and archaeological site.
One of southern Sweden’s largest Iron Age settlements with an archaeological park and museum in Skåne; visitors study burial finds, wooden-post reconstructions and exhibitions.
Uppåkra is a major Iron Age and Viking Age archaeological site in Skåne County in southern Sweden, near Lund. The settlement was occupied from roughly the 1st century AD until about the 11th century and is one of the largest known central places in southern Scandinavia for that period.
Excavations have uncovered the remains of a long-lived central precinct with evidence for large wooden halls, craft activity, and ritual deposits. The site has produced extensive metalwork and other artefacts that are displayed in regional museums and in the local visitor centre. Public programming includes guided tours and seasonal open days tied to the excavation seasons.
Archaeological work at Uppåkra has been led by researchers from Lund University since the mid-1990s, building on earlier finds made by local antiquarians. The settlement appears to have functioned as a regional centre with elite activity and ritual functions through the Iron Age and into the Viking Age before declining around the time Lund rose to prominence.
The site lies a few kilometres south of the city of Lund in Skåne County, on low-lying agricultural land that was attractive for settlement. It is readily reached from Lund and serves as a short-day trip for visitors based in southern Sweden.
- Excavation history: Excavations at the site began in 1996 and have continued seasonally since then, producing large numbers of metalwork and ceramic finds.
- Where to see the finds: Many finds from the site are exhibited in museums in Lund, including the Lund University Historical Museum and the open-air museum Kulturen.
