St. Michael's Cathedral

St. Michael’s Cathedral in Sitka, Alaska is a Russian Orthodox cathedral established during the Russian colonial period in the mid 19th century and is a key site of Russian-American religious heritage.

The cathedral is noted for its onion-domed silhouette, wooden construction and an interior dominated by an ornate iconostasis and historic icons. Visitors come to view the architecture, icons and to learn about Alaska’s Russian Orthodox history.

The original church was constructed by Russian settlers and clergy to serve the religious needs of the colonial community and later of local Orthodox congregations; the building has suffered damage and undergone restoration work in the 20th century while remaining a functioning parish.

The cathedral is located in downtown Sitka on Baranof Island, close to the harbour and a short walk from other historic sites in the town.
