Parthenon

The Parthenon in Nashville is a full-scale reproduction of the classical Greek Parthenon, located in Centennial Park; it was first erected for the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition and later rebuilt as a permanent structure.

The exterior emulates the Doric temple form of the Athenian original at full scale, making it a notable architectural landmark and photo subject in the city. Columns and entablature closely mirror the proportions of the ancient temple and are visible from the park grounds.

Inside, the building serves as an art museum and houses a large seated statue of Athena, a modern interpretive recreation that dominates the central cella. Galleries display rotating and permanent exhibits of American art alongside architectural exhibits related to the replica.

Constructed as part of the 1897 exposition, the original was intended as a temporary attraction; civic support later led to reconstruction in permanent materials in the early 20th century and ongoing use as a cultural facility. The Athena statue by Alan LeQuire was installed as a major interior feature in the late 20th century.
