Main image

Soay is a small Scottish island in the Inner Hebrides, situated near the west coast of the Isle of Skye. It is a rocky, sparsely populated island with a history of small-scale crofting and maritime use.

The island’s landscape comprises steep rocky shores, small sheltered bays and grazing ground that has supported limited human habitation and grazing in the past. Modern visitors reach the island by private or chartered boat and should plan for minimal facilities.

Historically the island supported small communities and subsistence activities; over time permanent population has declined and the island is now quiet outside occasional visits. Land use has focused on grazing and seasonal occupancy rather than permanent large-scale habitation.

Soay lies off Skye in the Inner Hebrides and is part of Scotland’s marine and island environment, exposed to Atlantic weather and tidal conditions.

  • Location and access: Part of the Inner Hebrides island group, lying close to the west coast of the Isle of Skye and accessed by small boat from Skye.

How to Get to Soay #

Soay (off the Isle of Skye) is typically visited by small boat from the village of Elgol on Skye. Elgol is reached by road via the A87 then the single-track B8083; there is a small car park at Elgol and boat operators run short trips to Soay (weather permitting). Book a local boat charter from Elgol in advance - the crossing to Soay is brief and disembarkation is from a shore landing.

Tips for Visiting Soay #

  • Treat landing as subject to landowner permission and tidal/weather restrictions-many small Hebridean islands require prior permission to land and have very limited landing spots.
  • Reach Soay with a local boat operator from Skye (operators commonly run from Elgol or nearby harbours) and confirm the pick‑up/drop‑off plan-tides and sea conditions strongly affect accessibility.
  • Plan around tides and rough seas when scheduling time ashore; sheltered landing sites can be restricted, and your skipper/guide will advise the safest approach.

Best Time to Visit Soay #

Visit between late spring and early autumn (May-September) for the most reliable access, milder weather and better wildlife opportunities.

Late spring to early autumn (best access)
May-September · 8°C to 16°C
Milder weather, longer daylight and calmer seas make this the best period for visiting, wildlife watching and walking.
Autumn / Winter (limited access)
October-April · 0°C to 10°C
Rougher seas, stronger winds and shorter days reduce access and outdoor comfort-ferries may be less frequent.
