Lunga
Island Treshnish Isles island notable for large puffin colonies
Island in the Treshnish Isles, Lunga is visited for large seabird colonies-especially puffins-coastal walks and boat trips from Mull.
How to Get to Lunga #
Lunga (the island in the Treshnish Isles) is reached only by boat. The usual access is to take a licensed wildlife or island‑cruise from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull; operators run day trips in summer and the boat crossing typically takes around 30-60 minutes depending on vessel and conditions.
Tobermory itself is reached by road on Mull or by ferry to Mull (CalMac services to Craignure) and then driving to Tobermory; landing on Lunga depends on sea and landing conditions, so visitors should book with a local operator.
Tips for Visiting Lunga #
- Book a wildlife boat trip from Tobermory (Isle of Mull) or a licensed local operator that includes landings at Lunga if you want to go ashore; many tours just circumnavigate the island for wildlife viewing.
- Visit between late spring and mid-summer (May-August) to see Atlantic puffins on the cliffs-this period also gives better chances of calm seas for boat landings and wildlife viewing.
- If you plan to land, arrive early with the first boats where possible: numbers swell mid-morning and by late afternoon departures are limited; follow the skipper's landing and biosecurity instructions to protect the breeding birds.
Best Time to Visit Lunga #
