United Center is an indoor arena on Chicago’s Near West Side and is the home of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls and the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks. The arena opened in 1994 to replace the nearby Chicago Stadium and serves as Chicago’s primary large indoor sports and entertainment venue.
The venue hosts a mix of professional sports, concerts and special events, with capacity of roughly 21,000 for basketball and slightly fewer for hockey depending on configuration. A range of premium boxes, clubs and concourse amenities support large-scale events.

The arena is located west of the Loop near the intersection of Madison Street and Damen/Just east-west arteries, within driving distance of downtown Chicago and served by several transit routes and commuter access points.

How to Get to United Center #
United Center is on Chicago’s Near West Side at 1901 W Madison St, about 3 miles (≈5 km) west of the Loop. From downtown, take CTA bus services along Madison (the #20 Madison bus serves the Madison corridor and stops close to the arena) or use a short taxi/ride‑share; expect a short bus or drive from Union Station/Ogilvie into the United Center area.
By car follow I‑90/94 or I‑290 westbound and exit toward W Madison St; there is event parking on and around site but space and traffic are restricted on game days, so public transit or shuttle options are recommended.
Tips for Visiting United Center #
- Use public transit on event days-CTA buses and trains are generally faster than driving because street and arena parking fill quickly and traffic around the United Center is heavy.
- Plan to arrive at least 45-60 minutes before the published start time to get through security and concessions; late arrivals face concentrated entry queues and congestion in concourses.
- Don't miss the Michael Jordan statue and other outside sculptures near the main entrance - they're popular photo spots and are right outside the arena, so allow a few extra minutes before or after the event.
