Unalaska Island
Island Aleutian island hosting the major Dutch Harbor port
Aleutian Island hosting Dutch Harbor, the region’s major fishing port; visitors come for commercial fishing history, WWII sites, seabird colonies and cold-water seafood. Access via Unalaska/Dutch Harbor airport and ferry connections.
Unalaska Island is part of the Aleutian island chain in Alaska and hosts the town of Unalaska and the port complex known as Dutch Harbor. The island is a principal centre for commercial fishing in the region and for Aleutian maritime operations.
Rocky coastlines, deep harbours and frequent maritime weather define the local landscape; significant features include the built harbour facilities and the volcanic cone of Makushin. The island supports fisheries infrastructure, cold-water marine wildlife and rugged coastal scenery visited by fishermen and seasonal tourists.
Dutch Harbor grew into a major fishing port in the 20th century and the island saw military activity and fortifications during World War II, including the June 1942 attack that marked the Aleutian campaign. The island’s economy has long been dominated by seafood harvesting and processing.
Unalaska Island lies in the eastern Aleutians between the Bering Sea and the North Pacific, administratively part of the Aleutians West region of Alaska. It is remote from Alaska’s main population centres and is accessed by air and sea services serving the Bering Sea fisheries.
