Umma
Archaeological Site Ruins of an ancient Sumerian city-state
An ancient Sumerian city-state in southern Iraq, Umma preserves archaeological mounds and early Mesopotamian remains. Scholars and archaeology-minded visitors come to study cuneiform-era layers and the site’s role in early urban history.
Umma is the name of an ancient Sumerian city-state in southern Mesopotamia, identified with the archaeological mound generally associated with Tell Jokha in modern-day Iraq. It was an important political and agricultural centre in the Early Dynastic and Ur III periods.
Excavated remains include urban structures and administrative records; Umma is historically notable for frequent border disputes with the neighbouring city-state of Lagash, episodes of which are recorded in contemporary inscriptions. The city was part of the Sumerian cultural and political landscape from the third to second millennia BCE.
The site is located in Dhi Qar Governorate in southern Iraq and is identified with an archaeological tell near modern rural settlements, within the Mesopotamian alluvial plain.
- Archaeological finds: Archaeological excavations at the site have recovered cuneiform tablets and urban remains that document Sumerian occupation and administration.
Tips for Visiting Umma #
- Before planning a visit, check current security and access requirements and arrange visits through a reputable local tour operator or the regional antiquities authority in Dhi Qar, as archaeological sites in southern Iraq often require permits or guided access.
- Aim for the cooler months (late autumn to early spring) and go early in the day to avoid summer heat and to maximize daylight for inspecting surface features and tells.
- Combine a site visit with a stop at the regional museum (Nasiriyah/Dhi Qar) to see finds from local excavations - the museum context helps make sense of the ruins that are visible on site.
