Ulpiana

Ulpiana (also Ulpina) is an archaeological site and former Roman-Byzantine city near the modern town of Lipjan in the District of Pristina, Kosovo. It was an important regional urban centre during the Roman imperial and early Byzantine periods.

Archaeological work at Ulpiana has exposed city streets, fortifications, public buildings and several early Christian basilicas, along with funerary contexts and inscriptions. The site shows occupation and urban development from the 2nd century through Late Antiquity, with evidence of earthquake damage and subsequent repair in the early 6th century.

Ulpiana is located inland in central Kosovo, close to the modern settlement of Lipjan and within the administrative area of Pristina; it is reached by regional roads from Pristina and other nearby towns.

• Archaeological remains: Excavations have revealed street grids, public buildings, early Christian basilicas and fortification remains dating principally to the Roman and early Byzantine periods.
• Finds: The site has produced mosaics, inscriptions and funerary material that document urban life from the 2nd through the 6th centuries AD and later rural reuse of the area.
